What Does This Tool Calculate?

The Calorie & Portion Calculator calculates your pet's daily energy needs using the scientific RER (Resting Energy Requirement) and MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) formulas.

The calculation is personalized based on species, weight, age, activity level, neutering status, and body condition. It recommends daily calorie needs (kcal) and food portion (grams).

How Is It Calculated?

Base formula: RER = 70 × (BW kg)^0.75

MER = RER × Activity Factor. Activity factors:

  • Neutered adult cat: RER × 1.2
  • Active adult dog: RER × 1.6
  • Puppy/Kitten (4-12 months): RER × 2.0
  • Obesity-prone: RER × 1.0
  • Working dog: RER × 2.0-5.0

Frequently Asked Questions

An average neutered 4 kg house cat needs about 200-250 kcal daily. However, this varies by breed, age, activity level, and body condition. We recommend using this tool for an accurate calculation.

Package recommendations are often 20-30% more than needed. Personalized calculation gives a more accurate result. Especially for animals needing weight control, trust scientific calculation over package suggestions.

Neutering reduces metabolic rate by 20-30%. Therefore, neutered animals need significantly fewer calories. Without portion adjustment, obesity risk increases. This tool automatically accounts for neutering status.

Yes. Wet food contains 70-80% moisture, so its calorie density is much lower than dry food. You need 3-4 times more wet food to reach the same calories. This tool automatically adjusts the portion calculation based on food type.
