FCM allows comparing the true energetic milk yield of cows with different fat percentages. A cow producing high-fat milk may actually be more efficient than one producing more low-fat milk. Dairy plants also price milk based on fat content.

Main causes of milk fat depression: insufficient forage (NDF below 35%), excess concentrate, subclinical ruminal acidosis, heat stress, and fat mobilization. The fiber:concentrate balance in the ration is critical. Forage particle size is also important.
